I’m halfway through a wonderful project with The Discover Centre in stratford. The project is called Catching Words and involves three artists each delivering a term of weekly sessions for year 2 to inspire a love of literacy through their art practice.
As a poet I have been encouraging the students to write and perform poetry and to get to grips with the main poetic devices….

Similes
So far sessions have included hunting for similes with post-its outside, creating recreations of photos with poetic lines, making up adventure poems via the hall jungle gym and exploring books through a “book hunt”.
I’m currently working in seven schools spread through east London and Hertfordshire. The sessions have been lots of fun as children have created some wonderful lines and impressed myself, the wonderful Discover story builders and their teachers by remembering words like Onomatopoeia, volunteering examples of similes and (without prompting) coming up with lines of personification.
